Using Patio Accessories to Create a Comfortable Outdoor Living Space

When I was growing up all we had was a picnic table, a charcoal grill and some aluminum lawn chairs on the back porch; now outdoor living has evolved into an art form.  There are entire books and television shows dedicated to decorating outdoor spaces, and there are many accessories to choose from that make outdoor living more comfortable and convenient.  There are outdoor rugs, heaters and misters that allow you to use your outdoor space many months of the year.

Whether you live in a tiny apartment with a tiny balcony or a huge suburban house with a multi-level deck, you want your outdoor space to be a comfortable place for friends and family to gather.  There are many ways to make your space into a real room; the best way is by defining the space with an outdoor rug.  These rugs are made of durable, weather resistant material and come in many shapes, sizes, patterns and colors.  They allow you to cover the ugly concrete, brick or wood floor of your outdoor area in a way that adds color and character to the area.  They protect bare feet from hot surfaces in the summer and cold surfaces in the winter.

There are many outdoor heaters available that will allow you to use your outdoor area earlier in the spring and later in the fall.  There are various types and sizes of outdoor heaters to choose from; there are large models powered by propane and smaller electric heaters perfect for a small patio or balcony.  Another option for heating an outdoor room is an outdoor fireplace or fire pit.  These also range in size and can be portable or built in; however, built in fireplaces can be expensive.  Also, if you live in an apartment or condominium, check with the management of the complex to see if an open flame is allowed.

Heaters make the patio more comfortable in cooler weather, but what about the middle of summer when it’s 100 degrees outside?  Patio misters can lower the temperature by 30 degrees and make you patio a comfortable place even in the dead of summer.  They use an evaporation process that absorbs heat and lowers the temperature.  These misters can be an expensive addition, but are well worth it if you enjoy being outside.

These are just a few ideas that may make your patio or deck a more useful place for more months out of the year.  You have invested a lot of time, effort and money into your outdoor living space; therefore, these little additions will make it just a bit more comfortable and enjoyable.
