The Drawbacks of Mirrored Furniture

Everything has a positive side and a negative side. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about people, places, or contemporary mirrored furniture. Sir Isaac Newton (or was it Benjamin Franklin?) said that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction well, for every positive quality there is going to be an equal and opposite negative quality.

Mirrors have been around for a long time and they are incredibly useful. They reflect light so that you can see whatever the mirror is pointing at in the surface of the mirror itself. The concept of pairing mirrors with furniture has been around since the 12th century when people realized it was important to have some sort of vanity mirror in the bathroom or in the bedroom. Furnishing an entire room with mirrored furniture became popular in Venice a little bit later and then experienced an incredible boom in the 1960’s and 70’s with the rise of the art deco movement.

Mirrored furniture has a way of creating an illusion of space in a room. You can put down a mirrored armoire along one of your walls and it will seem to expand the room rather than close it up. Mirrors also tend to keep natural light in a room with a lot of windows. Dark woods and colored fabrics absorb the light energy while the mirrors reflect it and bounce it all around. The more mirrors in a room the longer it will stay lit and the brighter it will be.

But what are some of the drawbacks to mirrored furniture? As we stated earlier, everything positive has its negative. So what’s bad about it anyway? You can learn more about them at Mirrored Furniture Gallery but here are the top three:

The Expensive Price Tag:

On average, high quality mirrored furniture will run your bill up quite a bit more than furniture that does not use mirrors. The glass surfaces are expensive to manufacturer and difficult to install so it makes the price go up.

Hard to Keep Clean:

Dust particles floating in the air and the oil on your hands tend to get all over mirrored furniture. You are going to need to clean each piece regularly to make sure it shines.

Fragile:

As with all things made out of glass, mirrored furniture is easily broken. It can be expensive to repair cracks and since most furniture has moving parts there is a higher risk of accidental shattering.
