Plantation shutters are some of the most aesthetic window treatments around and they are growing in popularity amongst home owners. They can be made from a variety of material ranging from vinyl or faux wood, to hard wood. Consequently, prices range accordingly. Home Depot plantation shutters are available in all materials, as are those sold at Lowes and at most stores that deal exclusively with shutters and blinds.

Choice of material alone is not the only consideration when buying plantations shutters, however. They are usually a fairly expensive investment, one which will actually increase the value of your home; however it is important to make sure that your shutters meet all of your needs.  One important thing that is often overlooked is attention to the detail of how the panels meet. Many wood shutters are simply cut straight so that the panels simply press up against one another when they meet. This is very simple and requires no extra steps during the manufacturing. However, a problem that people see with this type of joining is that light will often seep in through the cracks. That may or may not be a problem, but if you are hoping to have real control over the lighting in your room you may want to consider an alternative.

A rabbet join is a much better option. With this, a small lip is made by carving it into each of the panels. This way, when the panels meet the lip fits neatly into the panel, eliminating light bleeding into the room through the join.  It is said that a sign of great craftsmanship on shutters is when not only the unhinged panels have this type of join, but even the hinged panels.

Small matters such as this are the tell-tale sign of a well made shutter. Many on the market are not made with these types of joins, however a high-quality shutter should. This is just one of the small details that will be considered with custom designed and well crafted wood plantation shutters.
