Black Mold Removal is a Two Step Process
Fully removing black mold from a home can be a rather difficult task. What many people don’t realize is that it’s a combination of eliminating the mold, as well as eliminating the cause of the mold. This means you think you’ve got the problem under control because you’ve employed only half of the solution, but eventually you find out that your black mold removal tactics were ineffective.
First of all, you should determine why mold is going in the first place. Is it something that could be eliminated by opening the blinds in a room that tends to remain dark most of the time? Direct sunlight will prevent mold in some cases. If you find that mold is inexplicably forming on a particular wall in your home, you may have to open up that wall. You’ll likely find that there is a pipe behind that wall that is leaking. Even a minor leak, that doesn’t produce any visible water damage, can provide the right conditions for mold to grow. Now that you’ve given your room proper lighting, or have fixed the water source that the mold was feeding off of, you can’t stop there. While this might even cause the mold to go dormant and appear to recede, the job is not quite complete.
The next step you must take is actively killing and cleaning the affected areas. This means using true black mold removal products. While bleach will work on tile, and other smooth surfaces, it will not work in eliminating mold in wood or drywall. These are food sources for mold, as they provide a source of cellulose, and mold will bury itself deep within these materials. Mold removal products are designed to penetrate these surfaces, and kill and cleanse all mold. If the mold is severe enough, you might have to remove and replace entire sections of drywall, insulation and other materials. To make sure that the mold doesn’t return, you might have to hit these surfaces with the cleaning products a few times over the course of several weeks.
The removal of black mold might seem like a difficult and hopeless task. If you feel that doing a complete job of it is beyond your capabilities, you’re going to have to call a professional. The damaging effects of the mold on your home, and the possible health hazards are too much to let slide with a half-hearted effort. However, if you attack the mold from both angles properly, you can win the battle against black mold.
