Makita Impact Drivers – What You Need to Know When Shopping for a Makita Impact Driver

Makita Impact Drivers Are Perfect for the Tough Job

Impact drivers are increasingly becoming an indispensable tool in any household or workshop. It is useful in both assembly and disassembly. For assembly, impacts drivers provide a quick, simple, and easy way to fix bolts, nails, and screws into place. No more hours of struggling with your old hammer. During disassembly, impact drivers are useful in removing recalcitrant nails or rusty screws. Impact drivers do the whacking and slapping for you. This simple tool can spare you the hours and the sweat you would otherwise spend dealing with stubborn nails. This leads to increased productivity and more time, which you can spend on more important things.

If you are planning to enjoy the benefits of an impact driver, many professionals will recommend only one brand: the Makita Impact Driver. The company has 90 years of experience to back its innovative designs. Superior manufacturing and engineering techniques characterize the company, so you are sure you get only the best performance out of their products. All of their products are made only from premium grade raw materials and have undergone extensive quality control before being distributed in the market. Their advanced design brings unparalleled torque, and electrical and mechanical efficiency. The company only uses the best materials available to ensure the satisfaction of Makita impact driver users.

Makita offers an extensive line up of power tools to meet all consumer demands. The company offers several options for you, including the Makita Cordless Impact Driver which has received good reviews from users. These cordless drivers are battery powered and offer maximum flexibility and ease of use. Do away with the hassle of long cords and increase your mobility with cordless options.

The batteries that power Makita Impact Drivers are highly reliable and charges quickly. Cordless drill batteries by Makita only recharge for 15 minutes and bring up to 18 volts of power. They also have a long life span, which makes them very reliable. Other users achieve a lighter weight by using smaller batteries, but that means less operation time. However, knowing that these batteries recharge for only 15 minutes, the use of smaller batteries brings only a minor inconvenience. Aside from the Makita 18V Impact driver, the company also offers the Makita LXT impact driver, offering the innovative Lithium ion batteries for long lasting power and superior performance than Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. These battery innovations by Makita make their products the top choice whether for household or professional and industrial use. They are most reliable and have satisfied millions of customers throughout the world. Other devices are rated to operate at 14.4V, 10.8V, 7.2V and 9.6V of battery power. Choose whichever you think is best for you. For heavy duty application, a higher voltage rating is more appropriate.

Other power tools are the Makita Sander and Makita Angle Grinder. They are also blessed with the same innovations as impact drivers but have specialized applications, as connoted by their names. Angle grinders are useful for tight corners where mobility is limited. They have a specially designed shape to provide maximum reach in close quarters.

Generally, all tools from Makita offer the benefits of being lightweight yet able to bring out extreme power enough to finish all jobs. They also provide variable speed control for precision work. These machines are compact with large carbon brushes for increased durability. They also offer electronic monitoring systems to reduce motor overload and burnout during heavy work. Moreover, their unique casing provides protection for the motor against harmful dust and debris.

The downside of a Makita impact driver is its cost. For a tool this powerful and innovative, you have to spend a few hundred bucks for it. Considering its features and benefits, however, $300 for a power tool is indeed a worth-while investment. A 3-year warranty comes with the tool so you can be secured of your investment. If you are on a heavy-duty job requiring heavy-duty tools, Makita impact drivers is the one you need. Trusted for over 90 years by consumers and professionals, the company has made a name in the construction industry. As more and more people begin to utilize the benefits these machines offer, you’ll see less and less reasons why it’s not yet time that you get to have one for yourself.

So you find yourself shopping for an impact driver, but you didn’t even really know what an impact driver was, is that right? Well, I’m going to make an assumption here; the assumption is that you don’t necessarily know all that much about home improvement, construction, remodeling or the tools that are used in those endeavors. And if that is the case, don’t even worry about it. We’re going to do what we can to help get you caught up and on your way to choosing and using some good quality cordless power tools to help you in your ongoing around the house do-it-yourself home improvement efforts.

There’s probably a pretty good chance that you at least have a hammer and a screwdriver around the house, right? Well, while you shouldn’t necessarily get rid of those tools, you’ll be much happier if you let yourself graduate to the new generation of cordless, rechargeable power tools that most people use these days, whether they’re a professional contractor or even for regular jobs around the house. And of all these different powertools to choose from, probably the best first investment you could make would be in a cordless impact driver.

An impact driver is something that looks somewhat like a power drill, and in fact it can be used to do some drilling if you need it to and if you have the right drill bit to put in place. However, the main difference between this tool and a drill is that an impact driver will be capable of delivering strong and sudden rotational as well as downward force to whatever it is working on, whether it be a drill bit or a screw or nut or bolt. This greatly helps you when you need to fasten many, many screws, or if you need to loosen a particularly stubborn and stuck nut and bolt.

If you’ve decided that you do indeed want or need an impact driver, you’ll need to decide on a brand. While there are many manufacturers of power impact drivers such as Skil, DeWalt, Black and Decker and others, a long time favorite for many ‘in the know’ is the Makita impact driver. Personally I use a Makita 18v impact driver, but there are many to choose from. We’ll take a look at some of your options here, ranging in price anywhere from about $100 (or less, if you want to get an older model or a used one), to upwards of $300 or more.

Before we start looking at some different models, let’s get something straight. In most of these different models, you’ll see a ‘stat’ of the number of impacts a particular driver is capable of; for example 3,000. This is supposed to indicate that this particular impact driver is capable of driving 3000 screws down in a minute. While the mechanics of the machine may be capable of that, realize that no person is ever going to be working and accomplishing such high levels. The point is, don’t worry TOO much about the number of impacts on any one model over another. They’ll all be doing MUCH better than your manual screwdriver, I promise you that!

The first model we want to take a look at is the Makita 6916D, which was released about 7 years ago in 2003. Even though I now use a Makita 18v impact driver, this model has been quite popular as a 12v, and it is capable of delivering nearly two times the torque of most of the cordless drills you’ll find out there. Also, because it was released a number of years ago, you can probably find some very good deals on the price (it originally sold for about $250, I think). Here are a few of the technical specs on this piece of equipment:

Makita 6916D

  • Weight: 3.3 pounds
  • Chuck type: Hex shank
  • Dimensions: 6-5/8 inches long
  • Speed: 0 – 2300 rpm
  • Chuck Capacity: ¼ inch
  • Volts: 12
  • Battery type: Ni-MH
  • Recharge time: 75 to 90 minutes

While this is an older model, it still offers speed control, which is a very good option to have (especially for someone who isn’t terribly comfortable with power tools). Another benefit is that it is considerably lighter than some other models you may find out there.

The next item we’ll have a look at is the Makita 6935FDWDEX Cordless Impact Driver Kit. This kit is nice because it includes both the 6337 MForce Drill as well as a fluorescent work light for working in poorly lit areas.

A few specs for you to look over:

Makita 6935FDWDEX

  • 7 inches
  • Weight: 3.5 pounds
  • Battery: 14.4-Volt NiMH

Besides the light and the ability to drill whenever you need to, the biggest benefit of this particular impact driver has to be its torque combined with its ease of use.

The truth of the matter is that even if you have all the power and torque in the world, you need to have a tool that is comfortable to work with. Fortunately, the Makita 6935FDWDEX has a very nice and comfortable rubber grip that helps to absorb much of the vibration that will occur when working, rather than transferring it through to your hand. This will allow you to work much longer and more comfortably.

Now let’s take a look at the ‘little brother’ to the 6935FDWDEX, the Makita 6980FDWDE Cordless Impact Driver. Again, a few specs for you:

Makita 6980FDWDE Cordless Impact Driver

  • Dimensions: 6-3/8 inches
  • Weight: 3.5 pounds
  • Battery: 12-Volt NiMH

The 6980FDWDE is well known for its power and speed, despite it’s seemingly relative diminutive size. In fact, it is so well balanced in your hand and the power is so smooth and controllable, that it actually feels smaller than it actually is when you’re using it (it’s still capable of 1100 in/lbs of torque and 3200 impacts/minute). This makes this model a favorite for many people.

These are just a few of the more popular and highly recommended Makita impact drivers. Hopefully it’ll be enough to get you started, or at least able to go in and ask the salesperson a few specific questions to figure out which one is best suited for your needs. We’ll be back here soon to write up a few more recommendations, including my favorite Makita 18v impact driver. So stay tuned!
