How to Properly Maintain Your Air Conditioner Filters

So that cooling systems will properly function for years, it is necessary that air conditioner filters are properly maintained. Air conditioners that are maintained properly should efficiently function especially during hot summer season.

Maintenance of home air conditioning filters is effortless, and requires very little time. Apart from being an important contributor in making air conditioners function properly, there are other reasons why filters should be kept clean. The state of home air conditioning filters has an impact on people’s health. Cleaning air conditioner filters can effectively prevent serious respiratory disorders, allergies, and skin diseases. Below are steps on how to make your air filter clean and functioning.

Materials:

  • Screwdriver
  • Soap and water
  • Bottlebrush or piece of wire (for cleaning of drainage tube)

Cleaning Procedure:

  • Ensure that the air conditioner is switched off and unplugged from the power outlet. Remove the cover of the unit using the screwdriver. Typically, the air filter is attached behind the front of the cover. But sometimes, it is attached in front of the coils.
  • Clean the air conditioner filters with warm water and soap. Drain as much water as you can from the filter and let it dry before it is re-attached. If there is any damage in the filter, it is best to replace them.
  • Aside from that filter, you should also cleanse the evaporator coils and metal cover of the unit.
  • Gently vacuum the evaporator coils as well as the grill. Take note that the aluminum coils are very prone to damage so it is just right to handle them with care.

From time to time, air conditioner filters will require replacement as part of the overall maintenance of air conditioning units.

By ensuring that the filters and the other components of the air conditioner system are clean, you will be assured that you are breathing clean air at all times.
