More than likely, you purchased your bunk bed for your child or children and they are very excited about it. The last thing you want to do is have them sleeping uncomfortably because of the poor mattress selection.

The first thing to note when looking for a bunk bed mattress size is that unless you have purchased some exceptionally unusual bunk bed, the size of the mattress you will need is just your standard twin sized mattress. The standard size for a twin sized mattress is 39 inches wide by 76 inches long. If you’re a have your book that structure, you might want to take a quick measure of it to make sure yours does conform to this general size guideline. Also, when you do shop for your new bunk bed mattress, was unlikely they will be simply labeled “twin”. However, it never hurts to double check the measurements to make sure you don’t end up with something that’s just a little bit too long and cause more headaches than anything else.

The thing that makes bunk beds somewhat different than most other standard beds is that there is no need for a box spring. There are other beds such as platform beds that are similar to bunkbeds in this way and that is that platform upon which the mattress rests that gives both the support and that little bit of give to make for a good sleeping surface. I imagine one of the other reasons you wouldn’t want to have a box spring beneath the mattress on a bunk bed is that for many homes with average height ceilings, you would probably be giving somewhat tight on space with the double-decker situation.

The thing about bunkbeds is that they don’t all necessarily have the built-in support designed to replace a box spring. In such a case there are specific bunk bed mattresses that have built-in support within them, yet remain a “single-decker” setup. You’ll want to check whether your particular bed is set up for this kind of mattress or not. If you hadn’t yet purchased the bed, I would recommend getting one with built-in support in the bed rather than the mattress. By doing this, you have more options when it comes to Bob bed mattresses. In addition, the mattress with built-in support cannot be flipped over. It’s nice to be able to flip and rotate the mattress from time to time and that is why we recommend having this support built into the bed rather than the mattress.

There are certain mattresses that are manufactured and labeled as specific for bunkbeds. This mattress is very much like a mini futon and is quite easy to roll up and take a long with you if you are perhaps taking your child to a sleepover. In fact, a number of customers opted to purchase backup mattresses specifically for sleepovers when the children’s friends come over. One thing to note is that because this is a slightly thinner twin sized mattress, your standard sized twin sheets will be somewhat loose as compared to your typical full coil twin mattress.

Another option you might want to consider is a foam mattress. Memory foam mattresses can be heavenly to sleep on for many people. In addition, they are typically considerably thinner than your standard mattress construction. Another benefit of this type of mattresses that it too can be flipped over to use the reverse side. Also, for some people who are particularly sensitive to certain allergens.
