Building a DVD Stand
Are your DVDs and CDs all disorganized? Do you have them in multiple piles under your stereo or maybe just in a box in the closet. Even if you are not handy or have no woodworking skills, you can probably build your own DVD Stand. Here are some suggestions:
- Find a plan for the stand or cabinet at any number of sites on the internet. Most will be available for free of a nominal cost. Read the specifications very carefully to insure the unit will fit your room, decor, and DVD collection. In fact, I recommend that you build one that is 50% larger than your current collect as you do not want to run out of room (or go back to boxes in closets!).
- Once you find the DVD stand that you want to build, take the plans to a Home Depot or a local lumberyard. Talk to someone in the lumber department. Most of these stores are anxious to help you succeed at building something. Typically for a small extra cost (often less than $1) they will cut the materials into the proper lengths and widths for you. Then all you have to do is go home and assemble the unit.
- Confirm the dimensions of where the DVD cabinet will go before you begin to build it. Also make sure you can get the completed cabinet through the door (you don’t want to assemble it in the garage, only to find you can’t turn the corner up the stairs!).
- Paint or stain the unit to match the other pieces of furniture in your destination room. Add any necessary hardware also from Home Depot.
Building your own DVD stand can be both a very rewarding project, but could be significantly less expensive than buying one. Plus, you can custom fit the unit to both the size and style that you want.
