Backyard Fire Pits — Do It Yourself Project

Home decor accessories that capture attention are far and few. Fire pits and fire tables are exceptional examples of home accessories that people continuously gravitate toward like moths to a flame. Perhaps it is the mesmerizing dance of the flames or just some ancient inner instinct we developed centuries ago that draws us to fire.

In any case outdoor fire pits and fire tables have become all the rage. They are terrific places to socialize, relax, and cozy up by on a cool night. While there are many custom designer styles, you can also create your own fire pit and the process is relatively simple. Plus, a fire pit will spice up your backyard and really enhance the look of your outdoor landscape.

If you follow the steps below you can create your own cool and unique outdoor fire pit. Before you begin remember to check your city’s fire codes for open fire regulations. Pick your choice of stone or brick, decide on a shape and choose a nice spot in your backyard.

  • First you will start by laying out a perimeter. Lay out your first layer of stones in the shape you want them–square, circular, diamond, oval, etc. These will become the walls of your fire pit.
  • Take a shovel and dig it into the earth surrounding the perimeter of your stones. You’re sort of drawing a line about an inch deep around your stones.
  • Then remove the stones and dig a trench within the shape you just drew with your shovel. Dig it in about a foot deep and try to make sure the bottom is level.
  • Once done, cover the entire bottom of the trench with gravel, then place your first layer of stones back inside the edge of the trench.
  • Wear gloves and use a caulking gun to add masonry adhesive to the top of the first layer of stones. Place the next layer of stones firmly on top of the first, giving them a good press to make sure they really adhere. Continue this step until your pit is the height you want it.

Good job! Now all you have to do is fill the fire pit with gravel and your done. You can customize this design in any way you wish. Some options are to use colored stones or to mix and match different stone widths to create a unique pattern. Once your fire pit is complete your friends and family will want to hang out by it every time they come over.
