Adding Solar Lighting To Pathways
To illuminate a trail or a pathway through your yard or garden the trend today is to use solar lights. Dependent on solar energy derived from the sun. These lights consist of a small lamp, usually an led, which is powered by a battery which is in turn charged by a small solar collector which is built into the top of the light housing.
One of the main benefits of these lights is that they can be placed just about anywhere that you want just by simply sticking them into the ground. On the other hand they must be placed in a position where the top or the solar collector is able to receive direct sunlight for the entire day so that the batteries have sufficient charge to be used all night.
Because these lights do not require any external power source they are considered to be very energy efficient. The original purchase price for the lamp is the only expense that you will incur.
These lights produce a more subdued lighting effect which is not a bright light such as a security light, even though you can purchase solar security lights. Some see this as a limitation of these lights but others see it as a benefit to set the mood of the lighting arrangement.
One of the more important things to keep in mind when you are deciding where to place these lights is that they must be placed where they will be able to have direct sunlight which will let them charge the batteries all day. They will probably work in indirect sunlight but the batteries will not receive a full charge and will not last as long.
If the trail or path that you are trying to light up is completely covered for a majority of the day, such as between buildings or maybe a tree covered pathway, you may have to consider another power source. Either going back to a conventional wired system or you might want to obtain a string of solar lights which are available with a remote battery pack which also contains the solar collector that you can place in direct sunlight and then have the actual lighting in a totally shaded area.
This is just a look at a few of the options and requirements of using solar powered lights to light up your pathways.
